PHILADELPHIA–“I am pleased to report that Muñoz Marín is now safe for occupation by students and school staff. This determination was reached after PFT Health & Welfare Fund Director of Environmental and Occupational Safety and Health, Jerry Roseman, performed several days of inspections to ensure the District properly addressed the mold problems at the school.
“Once notified of the problem, the PFT immediately called on the District to address issues with the HVAC and ventilation systems in the building. The PFT was adamant that educators and schoolchildren not be allowed to go into the building until the District dealt with the mold problem and its underlying causes, and implemented an ongoing monitoring process.
“It’s unfortunate that so much time, labor and money had to be invested to fix problems that could be avoided with preventative maintenance, and better communication and transparency from the District. While it’s also disappointing that teachers at Marín won’t be able to welcome their students to newly decorated classrooms on the first day of school, our first priority is to ensure that Muñoz Marín’s schoolchildren and educators are starting the year in a safe, healthy learning environment.”
