PHILADELPHIA— This afternoon, after the announcement of District school closures and subsequent statewide closure announcement, PFT President Jerry Jordan issued the following statement:
“By closing Philadelphia Schools for the next two weeks, the District took the correct step this afternoon in response to the rapidly evolving Coronavirus crisis.
“In addition to my verbal communication with District officials throughout the week, I outlined my concerns in a letter to Dr. Hite, where I urged him to close schools.
“Our primary concern is and will always be for the health and safety of our members and students. The states of Maryland and Ohio have both taken the steps to close all of their K-12 schools and we thank Governor Wolf for choosing to follow suit in Pennsylvania. This decision clearly recognizes the health and safety concerns of our members and students.
“As always, our goal is to ensure that the health and safety of our members and the students they serve will not be compromised. This action mitigates risk posed by the Coronavirus.”
