Back to School: An Inspiring (and Hot!) First Day

Dear Members,

Like so many of you, I still wake up on the first day back to school with excitement and anticipation--and today was no different! I was delighted to join two fantastic celebrations of the return to school; Councilmember Helen Gym and I joined staff, students, parents, and community partners to kick the day off at Dobbins CTE and Duckrey Elementary. The enthusiasm was contagious.

Welcome back! It has been a pleasure speaking to so many of you this week--my team and I have been criss-crossing the city visiting and conducting meetings, and the enthusiasm for the year ahead is high.

This week I had the opportunity to meet with new members at both Stetson

Member Info: MMS Calculation Error

We recently received notice that the District erroneously calculated a very significant number of teachers' MMS ratings for the 2021-2022 school year. While the error had zero impact for the vast majority of those members affected, we regret that the District's error in calculation had a negative impact on 0.2% of members who received or will receive a recalculation notice. Roughly 0.1% of members receiving notice received a positive change to their score. Roughly 99.7% of members receiving notice will receive a completely neutral score adjustment. For those members receiving a negative shift in their MMS score, we recognize that the District's error is distressing, and we will provide you with the supports you may need to navigate this challenge. Member Message on the Devastation of Gun Violence

May 25, 2022 Dear Members, Like all of you, I can't stop thinking about the 19 students and 2 teachers who went to school yesterday in Uvalde, Texas and never returned home. Because of an eighteen year old with guns, so many lives are forever shattered, and I know you join me in holding the parents, siblings, families, and entire Uvalde community in your hearts. As I shared in a brief statement yesterday, this level of catastrophic gun violence that continues to tear families apart is simply too much to bear. Just eleven days ago, in Buffalo, New York, a white supremacist with access to guns targeted and terrorized a predominantly Black community, and in his racist massacre took ten innocent lives. I released this statement then, and am shocked and yet unfortunately not surprised that once again, our nation is responding to what should be an unthinkable tragedy. MORE

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month, and every May 18 is National Speech-Language Pathologist Day!

We are so very grateful for the remarkable work of our SLPs and hearing teachers. Each day, you work tirelessly to ensure accessible, quality education for your students. Outside of the classroom, you are tireless advocates for the resources and services our young people need and deserve.
